Veterans memorial completed

SMITHFIELD – A work day for members of the Jefferson County Veterans Association was held recently, with brick laying completed on the Memorial Wall.

Officials noted 600 engraved bricks were purchased by veterans, family and friends in honor of those who have served from the Civil War through the Afghanistan war. Adding more bricks means additional panels will be needed to accommodate those bricks.

Gallagher Memorials Inc. will do the measurements for a capstone, it was noted.

A meeting of the county veterans association will be held at 1 p.m. May 7 at the Friendship Park office, with Commander Bill Smythe in charge.

At a past meeting, plans for a plaque to be installed at the entrance to Friendship Park, denoting the Fort Friendship Veterans Museum within the park, were made.

The annual summer family picnic will be held at the Friendship Park shelter. Paul Greene and his wife are in charge of the arrangements, and veterans from all groups are invited to attend. Members will bring covered dishes.

Frank Santa is to chair Memorial Day services to be held at the veterans museum park at 3 p.m. on May 26. Final plans will be made at the May meeting. Frank Hoagland, a member of the U.S. Navy SEALS, will be the keynote speaker. The county veterans group is in need of funds to defer the cost of the annual Memorial Day event, which brings in veterans, family and friends from all over the county and a light lunch is served following the program at the Jefferson County Fair restaurant. Donations can be sent to Tony Phillippi, finance officer, 1341 county Road 15, Rayland, Ohio 43943.

Three new members were introduced at the April 2 meeting: Larry Yanda, Howard Mosser and Don McFall.
