Murder suspects still in Florida
CADIZ – It will likely be late May before Matthew Dowdel and Eve Irene Kelly return to Harrison County to face murder charges related to the death of Joseph M. Strother, according to Cadiz Police Chief Ryan McCann.
A Harrison County grand jury on Wednesday indicted the pair on identical charges of murder, felonious assault, complicity to murder and complicity to felonious assault.
They are accused of murdering Strother, 45, who was found dead at about 5 p.m. on March 28 in Sally Buffalo Park after his wife reported him missing.
Daytona Beach Shores police arrested Dowdel, 24, of Hopedale and Kelly, 33, formerly of Wintersville, following a traffic stop and subsequent foot chase that began in a Walgreen’s drugstore parking lot on April 5. The pair attempted to hide behind a Dumpster before taking off in different directions, and a police officer pursuing Kelley used a Taser to stop her.
“They are facing charges down there and they have to go through the extradition process,” McCann said.
Dowdel and Kelley are being held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail as Daytona Beach Shores officials work with Harrison County law enforcement.
Upon booking, Dowdel was charged with resisting an officer without violence, driving with license suspended or revoked, grand theft of a motor vehicle and being a fugitive from justice.
