Apartment incident leads to car chase, arrests

STEUBENVILLE – What started as a shot being fired into the floor of an apartment on Jefferson Street around 12:40 a.m. today ended with two adults and a juvenile being arrested following a brief car chase, City Police reported.

Officers were called to 1305 Jefferson St. about a shot fired. A police dispatcher was able to see on city crime cameras a silver vehicle fleeing the area and heading down Adams Street. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and began a brief pursuit that ended in a parking lot at South Fifth and Slack streets.

Police were able to see a passenger in the vehicle throw a gun out of the vehicle during the chase. Officers later recovered the gun. No other weapons were found in the vehicle or on the people arrested, police reported.

Jevante Childs, 21, of Steubenville was charged with falsification, having a weapon as a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon and a parole violation. Antell West, 26, of 223 N. Forest Ave. was charged with having a weapon as a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon and fleeing and eluding. A 17-year-old juvenile also was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County juvenile detention facility.

Childs, 20, pleaded guilty in March 2013 to having a firearm as a convicted felon and improper transportation of a firearm in a motor vehicle and was sentenced in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court to nine months in prison.

Childs also was sentenced in December 2008 in Jefferson County to three years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery, with a firearm specification.

Childs was released from prison in September 2011 and was on parole when a car he was riding in was stopped by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in June 2012 on Mall Drive.
