WLU entrepreneur event scheduled for March 26

WHEELING – A business idea may become a reality for a local entrepreneur.

West Liberty University’s Gary E. West College of Business and its Center for Entrepreneurship will hold its third pitch contest March 26 at its downtown Wheeling location, the Intellectual Capitol, 1413 Eoff St. Local entrepreneurs participating in the event pitch business ideas for an opportunity to win $5,000.

The pitch contest begins at 6:30 p.m., with the contest winner announced at 7:30 p.m.

Liz Elam, founder of Link Coworking in Austin, Texas, will speak at 5:30 p.m. about the co-working movement, a style of work involving a shared work environment and independent activity in which those coworking are usually not employed by the same organization. She also will offer her take on how Wheeling can improve use of its empty buildings.

“We can’t wait to hear what Liz has to say about downtown reuse of buildings and co-working. Plus, this is our third pitch contest and we are anxious to see the new business proposals and ideas,” said Carrie White, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship.

The evening’s events are open to the public. White encouraged people to attend, as each audience member’s votes are combined with those of a judging panel to determine a contest winner.

“I look forward to hearing how younger minds think and what new ideas our next generation can come up with in light of today’s fast changing technology and social media era,” said Gary Glessner, who is one of the contest judges. Glessner, a CPA, is the president of Glessner Professional Center in Wheeling.

Accepting up to six contest participants, the Center for Entrepreneurship will continue to accept applications until March 20. Entrepreneurs interested in pitching ideas or seeking information should contact White at (304) 336-8159 or at cwhite@westliberty.edu.

Several successful businesses have come out of previous WLU pitch contests, including September winners Vishesh Maskey with Spatial Decision Support System and Tyler Jones with Fajita by the Foot.

Contest sponsors include West Liberty University’s Gary E. West College of Business and Center for Entrepreneurship, the Regional Economic Development Partnership and Vision Shared of Huntington, W.Va.
