Wanted man arrested in city
EAST LIVERPOOL – With the cooperation of neighboring police departments, East Liverpool police were able to arrest a suspect in a shooting incident Monday at the Woodland Hills housing complex on Wilbert Avenue.
An off-duty Steubenville policeman saw Cedric Johnson, 20, of Steubenville driving shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday and notified other officers. Police pulled Johnson over on state Route 7 at Franklin Avenue.
City officers went to Steubenville and picked up Johnson, charging him with unlawful discharge of a firearm at habitation or school. He could face additional charges, according to the spokesman, who said, “We are glad we got a suspected shooter off the streets.”
Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned via video this morning in East Liverpool Municipal Court.
Johnson is suspected of firing at 22-year-old Tyler Austin in front of the apartment complex in what police have said was a domestic situation. Austin’s former girlfriend, with whom he has a child, was reportedly with Johnson at the time, and in her statement Erica Burke told police she had returned home to her apartment with Johnson and saw Austin was there, according to authorities.
She told police there was a confrontation between the two men and Johnson got out of her car. Burke reported she went to park and then saw Johnson walk up to Austin and begin shooting. Austin was not injured and fled to a nearby East Liverpool residence. Johnson also had fled the scene before officers arrived.
Bullet holes and spent rounds were recovered both in the exterior and interior of two apartments, with one bullet lodging in a wall next to a baby crib.
Also on Wednesday, city police received a call from Wellsville police Lt. Ed Wilson, saying they knew the whereabouts of Austin, for whom a warrant had been issued Tuesday for violating a protection order, reportedly stemming from an unrelated incident involving Burke.
City police went to Wellsville and took Austin into custody at an apartment near the entrance to the village.
Austin was arraigned Wednesday in East Liverpool Municipal Court, where pretrial is scheduled for Jan. 23, with cash/surety bond set at $50,000. He was ordered to have no contact with Burke or Woodland Hills. His address was listed in court dockets as Wells Avenue, Wellsville.
