Mine theft brings arrests
STEUBENVILLE – Three men were arrested early today by City Police in connection with a theft from a mine near Brilliant.
Police were notified around 1:30 a.m. today about a vehicle headed north on state Route 7 and the occupants allegedly were involved in a theft at a mine. Officers began pursuit of the car near South Street, when a man jumped out of the vehicle. The man, identified as Christopher J. Rice, 36, of 170 township Road 394, Toronto, was caught a short distance away and charged with possession of criminal tools, receiving stolen property and obstructing official business, police reported. A bag Rice was carrying was found nearby and contained bolt cutters, pliers and wire cutters, police reported.
The car was found on North Seventh Street and two men walking in the 800 block of North Seventh Street were taken into custody, police reported. Charged were Grant Bastia, 39, of East Palestine, receiving stolen property and a bench warrant; and Lawrence J. White, 46, of 188 National Road, Toronto, falsification and receiving stolen property.
Officers reported finding 12 large batteries inside the car and more tools.
Wells Township Police is investigating the theft.
