Upcoming events at Toronto First

Presbyterian Church:

Sunday – Sunday school begins at 9:40 a.m. Worship service begins. This is Stewardship Sunday.

Monday – The church council meets at 6 p.m.

Wednesday – Chi Rho, an after school program for youth, begins at 4 p.m. Choir practice will begin at 7 p.m.

Thursday – The yarn ministry will be at 10 a.m. Bible study begins at 6 p.m.

Wonderland lighting contest upcoming

The Toronto Winter Wonderland Residential Lighting Contest judging will be 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 15. The contest is limited to residents only of the Toronto School District, and those participating should pick up registration forms at the Toronto Apothecary, the city post office, the City Municipal Building, the Toronto High School Alumni Office and the Toronto Ohio Chamber of Commerce office, 107 N. Fourth St. The contest is sponsored by the Toronto Beautification Committee.

Judges are not Toronto residents, and there is no cash prize. However, a photo of the winning entries will be in the Herald-Star. Entry forms must be received by Dec. 11 and mailed to the Toronto Beautification Committee, 228 Haven Drive, Toronto, OH 43964.

Toronto issues fire department report for month

The Toronto Fire Department had a total of six calls for the months of September and October, with an average turnout of six members per call.

The calls included one arcing power line with no fire; two odor investigations; and three alarm system activations with no fire.

Members of the department performed routine maintenance on the department equipment. The department also had various repairs and replacement of plumbing throughout the fire station.

Prescription assistance offered

Those between ages 18-64 who have no prescription drug insurance can call (740) 537-2210 for assistance. A team of volunteers will help clients apply for low-cost or no-cost medications. The free program has been providing assistance since 2002 at the Riverview United Methodist Church, 105 N. River Ave. Assistance is provided on the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The entrance to the church is handicap accessible.

Those age 65 or older and who have no prescription insurance are eligible for the program.

This is not a distribution center for medications, but a volunteer-based program that assists in filling out paperwork and sending in necessary applications to drug manufacturers. Once approved, clients begin receiving medications directly from companies in six to eight weeks.
