Group to distribute holiday baskets for needy

MINGO JUNCTION – Mingo Junction Social Services is gearing up for its distribution of holiday baskets for the needy.

Sophie Schoolcraft, social services director, said the group last year distributed 240 baskets each at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed on Nov. 19 and the Christmas baskets, on Dec. 17. Both distributions begin at 9 a.m.

Schoolcraft said persons wanting a basket must sign up at the Municipal Building. They can sign up at one time for both distributions.

Village churches provide volunteers and donations for the baskets, including St. Agnes Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church, Harmony Methodist Church, First United Presbyterian Church, St. John Byzantine and St. Andrew Russian Orthodox.

The Wal-Mart Distribution Center provides meat and other food items, and Wheeler Funeral Home also provides donations.

Schoolcraft said the Key Club at Indian Creek High School also will be asked to provide volunteers.

She said the churches will have giving trees for church members to buy gifts for boys and girls age 12 and younger.

Persons wishing to make a donation for the food distribution can do so by contacting Schoolcraft or mailing a donation to Mingo Junction Social Services, 501 Commercial St., Mingo Junction, OH 43938, or by calling Schoolcraft at (740) 535-9161.

She said the agency in the past has received hundreds of dollars in cash donations from throughout the country.
