City man pleads not guilty to charges
STEUBENVILLE – John T. Wise entered a not guilty plea in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court Thursday to attempted murder charges.
The 25-year old city resident also pleaded not guilty to two counts of felonious assault and one count of having a weapon under a disability during his arraignment hearing before Judge David Henderson.
Henderson ordered Wise held in jail on a $250,000 bond.
Wise had been indicted in August by a Jefferson County grand jury in connection with a shooting in the 400 block of South Fifth Street in the early morning hours of June 24.
Law enforcement officials reported Sean D. Loveless was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower back.
Linda Surface also was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital with a gunshot wound to her leg.
According to City Police, Loveless and Surface said they were sitting on the front porch of Surface’s residence at 431 S. Fifth St. when someone shot at the house approximately six times from across the street.
Carl Cason Jr. and Wise each were indicted on one count of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault, all with firearm specifications, and one count of having a weapon under disability.
Cason, 21, of 1150 Oregon Ave. pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault, all with firearm specifications, tampering with evidence and two counts of having a weapon under disability. He must serve a mandatory sentence of at least 12 years before being eligible for parole.
Wise was arrested Tuesday afternoon by the Jefferson County Drug Task Force at a house on Lawson Avenue.
Task Force Officer Jason Hanlin said additional charges against Wise are under review by the Jefferson County prosecutor’s office.
Hanlin said 3.4 grams of crack cocaine, various prescription pills and $320 were seized from the house by the task force, city police and the U.S. Marshals.
