Tennis Day of Play to be celebrated Saturday in Weirton
From staff reports
WEIRTON – St. Paul School and the city of Weirton are teaming with the U.S. Tennis Association to offer free tennis play from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Starvaggi Park in celebration of Nickelodeon’s 10th-annual Worldwide Day of Play.
September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month, and the USTA and the tennis industry are hosting thousands of USTA free play events in celebration of Nickelodeon’s Day of Play.
“The USTA is making it easier and more fun for kids to get into the game,” officials said. “With tennis now sized right for age, kids play on shorter courts with smaller racquets and slower, lower-bouncing balls. Kids are able to play tennis made just for them, so they have a great time with the game and want to keep playing and improving.”
The events are designed to showcase how fun and easy it is for families to get involved in tennis, as well as providing a great way for parents to spend time with their children while keeping them active.
“USTA Free Tennis Play events are a great opportunity to get kids active and to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive, Community Tennis. “In addition, these events provide a fantastic forum to showcase the fun and excitement of youth tennis and will encourage families to get involved in the sport.”
St. Paul School’s tennis program was awarded a $2,000 grant from USTA to assist their efforts to build the sport locally. The money can be used for equipment or to defray the cost of offering their after-school tennis program and the junior tennis league as well as expanding those programs.
