ESC approves program expenditures

STEUBENVILLE – The Jefferson County Educational Service Center Governing Board approved several program expenditures Tuesday during its monthly board meeting, including a $4,825 budget for the Academic Competition Program.

The board also agreed to hire Richard Gregor as coordinator for the program.

The annual spelling bee program received a $500 budget during the hour-long meeting.

Superintendent George Ash said Ron Sismondo “is working diligently to put the annual event together.”

After some discussion the board agreed to increase funding for three Best Practice Grants for each of the local school districts from $400 to $500 for each grant.

“I know the teachers will appreciate the grants and will use the money for the benefit of their students,” noted Ash.

And the board approved a $2,500 stipend for the Buckeye Local, Edison Local, Harrison Hills City, Indian Creek Local, Steubenville City and Toronto City school districts to help offset some of the 2013-14 costs for a resource officer and or school safety measures.

Board members noted the payment is a decrease from last year but cited a reduction in state funding for the cut in funding.

In other action the board,

Approved payment of flu vaccines for all staff members.

Approved an interagency transition agreement between the Jefferson County ESC and the Help Me Grow program.

Approved a memorandum of understanding between the ESC and the Jefferson County Community Action Council Head Start program.

Under personnel matters the school board accepted the resignation of Bre Gatchel as an occupational therapist and agreed to employ Brittany Marconi as an occupational therapist.

Members agreed to a contract for consultative and coordination services with the Indian Creek Local School District for Christy Kelley on an as-needed basis and hired Ed Kovacik as an operations consultant and assigned Kovacik to the Connotton Valley Valley Union Local Schools on an as-needed basis.

The next governing board meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 15 at the ESC offices.
