EGCC hosts trucker training session

STEUBENVILLE – A truck driver training program plus PEC Safeland compliance training is coming to Steubenville in October. Eastern Gateway Community College partnered with Southern State Community College to bring the in-demand program to Eastern Ohio, officials said.

The truck driving academy begins Oct. 7 at the Pugliese Center on the Jefferson County campus. The academy runs for four weeks, and PEC Safeland compliance requires 24 hours of training. The total cost is $5,300.

“We are pleased to announce the newest location for Southern State’s TDA program,” said John Joy, SSCC dean of workforce development and community service. “The partnership agreement will be beneficial to all those who are interested in pursuing truck driving as a viable and financially rewarding career option.”

Eastern Gateway will provide the PEC Safeland compliance training, which provides an added credential for the student that will be valuable in the marketplace, officials said. The training brings together the health, safety and environmental training certifications most requested by oilfield operators. PEC compliance is SafeLand accredited and is accepted by every major and most mid-major operators in the USA. SafeLand certification is the environmental health and safety standard specifically designed for the U.S. Onshore Energy & Petroleum industry.

The Class A CDL and Class B CDL program requires 160 classroom hours for completion. The four-week program is offered during daytime hours Monday through Friday. All of the coursework for the program will be offered by Southern State TDA instructors.

In recent reports, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said that Ohio had a net gain of 43,000 jobs in 2011 and the types of jobs the administration thinks will be most in demand in Ohio over the next few years are engineers, computer scientists, machinists, long-distance truck drivers, diesel mechanics and welders.

Students then go through a thorough review and practice test before taking the actual Commercial Driver’s License exam.
