Annual Old Construction, and Mining Equipment Show set

NEW ATHENS – The 10th-annual Old Construction and Surface Mining Equipment Show is slated for Saturday and Sept. 8 at the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park grounds on Stumptown Road.

The event is sponsored by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association.

Antique trucks, construction and mining equipment will be on display and in operation throughout the weekend. Equipment owned by Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park members, members of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association and other organizations will be displayed or in operation.

Hours Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and hours Sunday are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Equipment will be in operation throughout the day.

The Silver Spade operators cab and its bucket are located on the grounds, organizers noted.

Some new items include an operating 1913 Thew Type O steam shovel; Big John, an underground miner statue made by local coal miner, Bob Flanagan; and a dealer booth that will include pieces of new machinery.

Kerry George, author of “Black Damp Century,” will have his book available for purchase. He is a former surface and underground coal miner and retired inspector.

During the past years there have been many pieces of static equipment on display, including operating equipment that moves and digs into the earth, such as a Cat 60 crawler pulling a Cat pull hoe; Insley K12 and L dragline; Marion 111-M dragline; Insley L dragline; Lorain 80 shovel; Euclid R27 rock truck; Cat 14E road grader; Bantam cable hoe; Mack B61 dump truck; and an Euclid R13 rock truck.

The event has become a miners’ and construction workers’ reunion, organizers said, and all antique trucks, construction, crawler and mining equipment are welcome to be displayed. Admission is $3 per person.

The Saturday events are a slow engine race at 9 a.m.; kiddie tractor pull at 1 p.m.; and entertainment at 3 p.m until 6:30 p.m.

Sunday will feature a church service at 8:30 a.m., with gospel music; saw milling, corn meal grinding, shingle making and the noon whistle blow with Bill Flowers; the crowning of the queen and thresherman of the year at 1 p.m.; baling and threshing and 2:30 p.m. awards for oldest man and woman attending the show. There is a kiddie coin hunt at 2:45 p.m.. and a parade of equipment ends the day.

A $6 membership is good for all weekend and includes a badge.
