Algonquin fest coming Oct. 11-13

CARROLLTON – Visitors come from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to go back to a time when a granite buhr mill ground the grain for flour, a steam-powered sawmill cut wood, a one-room schoolhouse educated children and people lived in log homes and cabins when they attend the annual Algonquin Mill Fall Festival, a century old celebration, that takes visitors back to the 1800s.

This year’s festival, the 43rd-annual event, will be held Oct. 11-13.

Many of the buildings, from the mill, two-story log house, farm house and barn date back at least a century or more and have been preserved or restored well.

The pioneer village is located in a valley surrounded by hills of beautiful fall foliage and features all the buildings of that time as well as hand-woven rugs, quilts, dyed wool products, soap making and spinning crafts that were produced before machines and technology took over.

Children will be excited about the old-fashioned candy counter and a train ride, pony rides, face painting and sand art that is there for them.

Adults can look over gift baskets, homemade jams and jellies, sweatshirts, buckwheat and whole wheat flours and drinks from the Corncob Saloon.

Live entertainment is featured on the stage during the festival. A church service will be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 13.

Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. No pets are allowed on the festival grounds. Admission is $8 per vehicle. Primitive camping is available at $15 per night.

The McCook House Civil War Museum on the square in Carrollton is open during the festival.

A variety of homemade food can be found on the grounds, including apple butter and bread, bean soup, homemade sauerkraut, a chicken barbecue and a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. daily.
