Grant funds topic at Edison board

HAMMONDSVILLE – Grant funds were discussed during the Edison Local School District Board meeting Aug. 13.

The board learned of several grants the district will receive for the new school year, according to Bill Beattie, district superintendent.

“The two grants we received were written by Dani Carroll in our music department,” said Beattie, adding both grants came from the Pugliese Charitable Foundation. “The one for the music department totaled $22,000.

“The soccer field grant (proposal for $25,000) was written by JoAnn Stagani,” continued Beattie, adding Stagai is the district’s athletic director. “That was a grant for our stadium lighting project we began a few years ago.”

Beattie said the district also received a Children’s Hunger Alliance grant for $500.

“We’re going to use that grant to purchase a wireless terminal to allow multiple breakfast lines,” said Beattie.

The district also received a $5,500 grant from the Ohio Department of Education for the Ohio Performance Assessment Pilot Project, which is for new state testing standards in 2014-2015, Beattie said. An additional $40,000 in grant funds also will be forthcoming from the Dyslexia Pilot Project to study, recognize and develop new strategies for the disorder for pupils in kindergarten to second grade, Beattie said.

“We applied for both grants. The pilot project is for new testing in English and social studies beginning in 2014,” he said, adding the Edison Local and Indian Creek Local school districts were two of eight throughout Ohio to participate in the Dyslexia Pilot Project. “This is the second year of a three-year study. It’s to help find new teaching (strategies) for those who begin to display signs of dyslexia.”

Beattie added the district is receiving $40,000 annually for the dyslexia project.

In other matters the board:

Accepted letters of resignation from Terra Rogers, teacher; Justin Baynes, junior high school football assistant coach; Brian Connelly, assistant football coach; and a letter of retirement from Phyllis Barker, library aide.

Approved bus routes for 2013-14 and a contractual agreement with the East Ohio Educational Services Center for audiology services.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Edison High School.
