8:50 np.m. Council approves police contract

STEUBENVILLE — City Council approved a new 19 month contract with the union members of the city police department Tuesday that will mean a 2.2 percent pay raise in September and a revised benefit package for new hires.

Steubenville Mayor and Acting City Manager Domenick Mucci said the contract is retroactive to June 1 but the pay raise will not go into effect until September 1.

“I want to thank and commend the police negotiating team for their hard and diligent work on the contract. The police understand the fiscal issues facing the city and the city understands their point of view. We were able to reach agreement on several cost savings measures that will allow the city to save money in the future. That allowed us to make a pay raise adjustment,” Mucci stated.

Mucci said he does not anticipate any reductions in the police ranks.

“The police understand the future outlook for the city. Once the contractual changes are implemented we will show a cost savings for the city,” said Mucci.

In other business Tuesday night the council heard the second reading for an ordinance authorizing and directing Mucci to advertise for bids for a Belt Filter Press for the Wastewater Department.

The council also heard the first reading for an ordinance authorizing the selling of personal property owned by the city of Steubenville and no longer needed for municipal purposes.

The auction is scheduled for Oct. 12.

And the council approved a resolution accepting the amounts and rates determined by the Jefferson County Budget Commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor

The council met for approximately one hour prior to the regular meeting to continue reviewing applications for the city manager job.

The council has until Sept. 14 to hire a new city manager.
