Arrest made in alleged vehicle assault attempt
STEUBENVILLE – Kenneth L. Jett, 35, of 608 Trenton St., Toronto, was arrested by City Police Monday in connection with an incident on June 23 in which he allegedly nearly ran over a city officer and a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.
Jett was charged with attempted vehicular assault. He was being held on a $100,000 bond today at the county jail.
The city officer and sheriff’s deputy were called to the 400 block of Dock Street around 1 a.m. on June 23 about a loud radio and children running around vehicles.
According to a deputy’s report, a Dodge Durango driven by Jett, rammed vehicles parked in the front and rear of the Durango while trying to flee the scene. The vehicle also hit a sheriff’s cruiser. According to reports, the Durango brushed up against Deputy Joe Lamantia, leading him to fire shots into its passenger side tire in an attempt to disable it. The city officer also discharged his weapon.
According to reports, the vehicle was so close to Lamantia that city Patrolman Matt Smarrella and two witnesses initially thought Lamantia had been run over.
According to the reports, Jett also nearly struck Smarrella. The officers said Jett didn’t respond to repeated orders to stop.
The vehicle was found several blocks away with a tire flattened from the shots fired.
