Village to kick off summer youth program

WINTERSVILLE – Children throughout the village will have the chance to have some fun in the sun during the seventh-annual summer youth program.

The free program, offered to children ages 5-12, will run Monday through Aug. 2 at Walnut Park, Mayor Bob Gale said.

“This is the seventh year we’ve run this program and it has become very successful with lots of children participating,” he stated. “They love the program and we looking forward to two new young ladies running this program and enhancing it.”

Emily Merriman and Kim Vaudrain, both college sophomores, will take over the program reigns this year.

“The program will run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.,” Merriman explained. “We are also looking for any high school volunteers to help if they are willing.”

Vaudrain explained a number of activities are planned for the children.

“We are going to have different themed weeks, such as a Hawaiian beach, superhero, Christmas in July, patriotic and cartoon week,” she noted. “We will also have a number of sports and arts and crafts for them to do. Costume contests will be held each week as well.”

Each child is responsible for their own lunch, Gale added.
