Family Fun Zone set for Sunday event

STEUBENVILLE -Several new attractions have been added to the free Family Fun Zone that will be a part of the third-annual Stars and Stripes Concert and Festival set for Sunday at the Harding Practice Field.

Hollywood City Center is the title sponsor for the event, which is presented by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

According to Jennifer Cesta of the organizing committee, “the food vendors will be open from noon to 10 p.m. and will include Baby Boyz BBQ Ribs, Ice Cream Brothers, Jeff Sickle’s elephant ears, funnel cakes, fried Oreos, water , iced tea, lemon shakes, Milliners Mexican Grill, TJs Concession, pizza, corndogs, fried cheese and Trinh’s Oriental Food. And, John Davis will have his Davis Foods at the practice field and at the beer zone in the Kroger Parking Lot.”

“I think those who attend the Family Fun Zone will be pleased with the food vendors who are participating. We’ll have everything from novelty-shaped ice cream bars to funnel cakes, and pizza to ribs, Chinese and Mexican food. The concert committee is grateful to the sponsors and vendors who are taking their time to be a part of the Family Fun Zone and provide free activities and entertainment for children,” declared Cesta.

Cesta said the car show presented by First Class Customs will be in the Harding School parking lot from noon to 5 p.m.

“At the Harding Practice Field parking lot we will also have a number of vendors and displays available for the public including the library bookmobile with face painting and tattoos from noon to 2 p.m. Visitors can also register for library card at the bookmobile. We will also have the city police D.A.R.E. vehicle, an ambulance for public inspection, the Froggy Van and the Wells Township Haunted House Hummer,” continued Cesta.

Disc Jockey Bill Harvey will be providing music in the fun zone

“As far as characters, we will see Ronald McDonald from noon to 2 p.m., Spike from the Wheeling Nailers from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Froggy from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.,” noted Cesta.

“Kurt James, sponsored by the Fort Steuben Mall, will have several events in the fun zone from noon to 5 p.m.. Of course, the Dialed Action Sports Team BMX stunt bikes will perform at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They are sponsored by Jim Davis Enterprises and promise to be very exciting,” added Cesta.

“Not only do we get to watch the stunts and tricks, but they share positive messages of anti-bullying, drug-free healthy living and bike safety. It will truly be a family show,” commented Cesta.

“We will have the Society For Creative Anachronism displaying fencing throughout the day and medieval combat at 1p.m. and 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., the First National Bank hot air balloon will be inflated. They will not be giving rides but will allow people to see how a hot air balloon works. And, the Hollywood City Center Kroger store will be donating cookies for decorating,” remarked Cesta.

“The Jefferson County Humane Society will join us with their dogs during the afternoon, and the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District will provide a painting activity for children. Med Express will have sunscreen and hand sanitizer, and they will give out bags and have supplies available for people to make own first aid kit.,” said Cesta.

“The Wheeling Veterans Center will be in the fun zone. Boy Scout Troops 740 and 3 will have a tent for children to learn how to make rope knots. We will have the Clear Choice Photo Booth, where visitors can get a free photo. There will be a Lego display from the Toy Museum and a duck pool for kids from Valley Hospice. And, Eastern Gateway Community College will offer children face painting and helium balloons.”

“And, Grafton’s Apiary will be demonstrating the art of bee keeping in the Family Fun Zone,” said Cesta.

Cesta said the music, photo booth, food, and vehicles will be located on the parking lot of the Harding Stadium practice field. People will get to take a look inside the ambulance and the bookmobile from the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. The vendors, inflatables, and stunt show will be on the practice field.

Best of all, organizers said, there will be no charge to enter the fun zone.

The beer zone is sponsored by Iron City Distributing and Choice Brands of Ohio, organizers said.

In the evening, the focus of the celebration will shift to Harding Stadium. The Joseph Sisters of Wheeling will take the stage at 5:30 p.m. They will be followed by the Todd Jones Band at 6:45 p.m. and headliner Phil Vassar at 8:30 p.m.

The concert will be followed by the city’s annual fireworks display at approximately 10 p.m.

General admission tickets for the concert are $15 and reserved seat tickets are $20 if purchased in advance. On the day of the concert, the general admission tickets will cost $20 and reserved seat tickets will be $25.

Tickets for the Stars and Stripes Concert are on sale at Kwik King stores in Steubenville, Wintersville, Toronto, Follansbee and Weirton. Tickets also are available at Peoples National Bank branches in Adena, Dillonvale and Mount Pleasant; the customer service center at the Fort Steuben Mall; the visitors center at Historic Fort Steuben; at the chamber office at 630 Market St., Steubenville; or online at jeffersoncountychamber.com.

The concert will be presented rain or shine, organizers said.
