City man sought following shooting

STEUBENVILLE – The manhunt for 21-year-old Carl Cason Jr. is continuing today following a Tuesday afternoon shooting at the Hawk Gas Station on South Seventh Street.

City Police Detective John Lelless said Tuesday night an arrest warrant had been issued for Cason on two counts of felonious assault.

Lelless said the police believe Cason fired a shot that struck a juvenile in the leg and fired another shot that missed an adult male at the gas station.

According to Lelless, the shooting victim was first taken to Trinity Medical Center West and then transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Cason, who is also known as ‘C.J.,’ is considered armed and dangerous. We are actively seeking him. Anyone with information regarding Carl Cason is encouraged to contact the Steubenville Police Department at (740) 282-5353,” Lelless said.

Lelless said the incident occurred at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday and prompted city police officers to converge at the station’s parking lot.

The Tuesday incident was the second shooting in the city this week.

Two people were shot early Monday morning on South Fifth Street.

Law enforcement officials reported Sean D. Loveless was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower back.

Linda Surface was also transported to a Pittsburgh hospital with a gun shot wound to her leg.

According to the city police Loveless and Surface said they were sitting on the front porch of Surface’s residence at 431 S. Fifth St. when someone shot at the house approximately six times from across the street.

The incident took place at approximately 12:32 a.m. Monday.

Loveless and Surface are recovering today in Pittsburgh from their wounds.
