Brothers arrested in shooting

STEUBENVILLE – Two brothers involved in a family brawl outside Parlett Wednesday evening were arrested in the city early today in connection with another fight in which gunshots were exchanged.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reported Christopher Z. Hawthorne, 22, and James W. Hawthorne, 27, both of Apartment 1, 1219 State St. went to the house of their brother, Brian Hawthorne, 34, of 15788 state Route 151, Cadiz, where a fight began.

During the fight, James Hawthorne pulled out a handgun and Brian Hawthorne hit him with a vodka bottle, knocking the handgun to the ground, a deputy reported. Brian Hawthorne kicked the handgun under a recliner, a deputy said.

A deputy said Christopher and James Hawthorne continued to hit and choke Brian Hawthorne. Christopher Hawthorne kicked Brian Hawthorne in the face, breaking two of his teeth, a deputy said.

James and Christopher Hawthorne then left the house after looking for the gun, a deputy said. A Harrison County sheriff’s deputy arrived first at the Parlett home and found the gun under the recliner.

Christopher and James Hawthorne then went back to Steubenville, where they became involved in a fight with a group of men in the 1400 block of Maryland, the sheriff’s department reported. Christopher and James Hawthorne were running away when someone in the other group fired a gunshot, a deputy said.

The deputy said James Hawthorne returned fire.

Christopher Hawthorne was charged with assault and domestic violence. James Hawthorne was charged with domestic violence, a bench warrant out of municipal court and having a weapon under disability.
