Indian Creek presents musical
WINTERSVILLE – A space alien out for world domination will visit the village this weekend.
Indian Creek High School’s drama club will present “The Little Shop of Horrors” beginning at 7 p.m. today. Additional shows will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and noon and 7 p.m. Saturday.
According to director Cody LaRue, 16 students are involved in the musical this year.
“This is a smaller cast production and, after not having a musical last year, I thought the interest might be down,” he explained. “We are hoping this generates more interest in the musicals.”
The musical is based on the 1986 thriller staring a lonely nerd, Seymor Krelborn, who works in Mushnik’s flower shop, enduring constant criticism from Mr. Mushnik and hiding his crush on co-worker Audrey. After finding an unidentified plant, Seymour names it Audrey. The plant doesn’t use soil, water or sunshine like other plants and is wilting until Seymour accidently discovers that it needs blood.
“This musical is a very dark comedy and it’s very tongue and cheek which is why we decided to portray it,” LaRue added. “We wanted to steer away from the typical broadway show and wanted our show to be fun, dark and have a crazy ending.”
Sophomores Skylar Dye and Isabella Nicosia will take over the lead roles at Seymour and Audrey, LaRue noted.
“I’ve been in about eight plays before in Hopedale,” Dye said. “I am so excited to portray this musical and I really enjoy the story as well as the music.”
Nicosia has also performed in different plays at the high school as well as with the Weirton Community Players.
“I honestly enjoy the whole concept of the play,” she mentioned. “I am excited to perform.”
Admission is $5 and tickets will be sold in advance as well as at the door, LaRue noted.
“We are excited to bring this musical to the area and hope to see a great turnout this weekend.”
