Harrison announces summer youth jobs program

CADIZ – The Harrison County Department of Job and Family Services once again will offer summer jobs to qualifying youth ages 16-24.

The state of Ohio recently allocated $100,000 in funds to the county for a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families summer youth employment program.

“Job and Family Services administers several programs focusing on the work-first philosophy and strives to provide quality employment, training and supportive services to assist individuals with obtaining and maintaining self-sufficiency,” said Scott Blackburn, director of the Harrison County DJFS.

This program will begin June 1 and employment must end by Aug. 31, officials said.

According to Joyce Brown, assistant director at the DJFS, allowable costs to the employer) include:

Payments to employers for wages (up to $10 per hour) and fringe benefits.

Workers’ compensation expenses.

FICA (6.2 percent of gross wages).

Work clothing (if necessary for employment).

The employer will be responsible for interviewing and hiring the youth. Reimbursement payments to the employer will be made at least monthly, once the proper forms have been turned in to the agency.

The Agency will be responsible for determining eligibility for the youth. Income must be under 200 percent of the federal poverty level and meet other TANF requirements, officials said.

Youth applicants must be Harrison County residents. Priority for participation will be given to youth ages 16-24 and youth who are currently 15 but will turn 16 by June 1.

The types of jobs include painting, cleaning, clerical, custodial, grass cutting, recreational aides, library clerk and others.

Work sites are at schools, with villages and townships and at parks, libraries and businesses.

Wages for the TANF Summer Youth Program are capped at $10 per hour, officials said, with no more than 35 hours per week of work allowed.
