Residents learn about community

WELLSBURG – Area residents will have an opportunity to learn about the variety of businesses in their own community while helping a local volunteer fire department by attending Discover Brooke County on April 15.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, formerly known as the Wellsburg Fire Hall, which will be filled with businesses and organizations offering food, samples and information, said Bill Konkle, event chairman.

Konkle added he and the Discover Brooke County committee will be showing their appreciation to the Wellsburg firefighters and junior firefighters for their assistance in setting up and cleaning up after past events by donating proceeds to the department.

Admission is $5 for ages 15 and up and $2.50 for ages 5-14, with children under 5 admitted free.

Discover Brooke County is presented by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, which was formed to promote tourism and businesses in Brooke and Hancock counties.

Among about 64 businesses and groups slated to participate are the Serbian-American Cultural Center, Vito’s 2, the Station Grille and Pier 12 restaurants, Riverwood Chiropractic, Traubert’s Pharmacy, Brooke County Public Library, Brooke County Senior Center and Brooke Hills Park.

Committee member Michelle Basil added there will be more than a dozen new participants this year.

Each has been asked to donate a door prize to be awarded during the evening. Door prizes in past years have included stays at local hotels and gift certificates for restaurants and other businesses, among other items.

There also will be a 50-50 drawing.
