Day No. 2 testimony in Steubenville rape trial

STEUBENVILLE – By 10:30 a.m. today, five witnesses had taken the stand as Day No. 2 began in the Steubenville juvenile rape trial.

Officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Steubenville Police Department, along with representatives of two cell phone companies, testified about cell phones seized from the alleged suspects and partygoers.

Cell phones belonging to three Steubenville High School student-athletes were taken into custody at the high school football field practice facilities. Officers seized those phones from the locker room.

Steubenville Police Capt. Joel Walker Jr. testified he went to a private residence to seize one cell phone, and also helped sift through evidence collected from other cell phones and returned to the police department by the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

The witnesses from the cell phone companies testified about collecting and maintaining cell phone records. Among the evidence introduced was two separate cell phone photos showing the alleged victim naked.

They also collected and analyzed text messages and other data from the confiscated phones.

The trial is continuing at the Jefferson County Justice Center.
