Weirton insurance coverage to cost more
WEIRTON – Property and liability coverage will cost the city more in 2013.
Council’s finance committee on Thursday recommended approval of the contract with Traveler’s, which will cost the city $685,966.
While the premium is higher than the roughly $612,000 the city paid last year, Assure America representative John Frankovitch told the committee the board of risk management’s proposal was around $877,000 and carried lesser limits.
Frankovitch said Traveler’s “still likes Weirton,” and pointed out the company had denied coverage to other communities and actually dropped a few as well.
Committee members also recommended council approve resolutions authorizing the city to provide the local match for transportation enhancement program funding for the 2012 Panhandle Rail Trail Extension project.
Members also recommended council approve resolutions to use funding from the Governor’s Community Participation Program to purchase tasers for the police department as well as for various projects sponsored by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce; Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center; Weirton Baseball Association; and Weirton Elks Lodge 1801.
Members also approved resolutions to purchase duty holsters, triple magazine cases and mounted tactical lights for city police and portable radios for city firefighters.
Council’s monthly meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday in the City Building.
