JSWCD native tree sale orders

accepted through March 22

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District’s native tree sale is under way, and although the annual sale is a conservation district staple since the Dust Bowl, it has a bit of a new twist this year.

The district will be offering to the public larger caliper native trees that will have a better chance of transplant success and improve the landscape instantaneously, according to a news release.

“By choosing native trees that are grown in Ohio, the trees the district is offering will be able to withstand the weather fluctuations of our area and be more tolerant and resilient of disease and wildlife damage,” according to Aaron R. Dodds of the district. Additionally, a selection of native shrubs also will be available for purchase.

“All trees being offered are native to this section of Appalachia Ohio and were indigenous to this area prior to settlement in the late 1780s. For this very reason, the tree and shrub species that are being offered are hardier than your ornamental or imported species,” Dodds notes. The plants selected this year by district staff are noted for being species that are beneficial for pollinators, wildlife or erosion control.

Because of the larger size plant, prices will be increased this year, and the trees and shrubs will be offered in lots of one plant each vs. the traditional package of five as seen in years past. The trees and shrubs will be offered in 3-gallon pots with trees being roughly 4 feet and shrubs being about 2-3 feet. Prices for a single tree will be $30 and a single shrub, $25.

All orders must be placed by March 22 with payment made in cash or by check to Jefferson SWCD. Pick-up will be April 11 and 12 at the JSWCD office in Suite 4 mezzanine, 500 Market St., Steubenville.

For those who wish to still purchase the traditional seedling packages that JSWCD typically offers, the Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District in Cadiz will still be offering a wide variety of seedlings. The Harrison office can be reached at (740) 942-2027.

For questions and information on tree species available, contact Dodds at the JCSWCD at (740) 264-9790 or at adodds@jeffersoncountyoh.com.
