Attends Kiwanis International Convention

-- Contributed

The 103rd-annual Kiwanis International Convention was held June 28-30 at Bally’s and Paris Hotels in Las Vegas with the West Virginia District represented by five of the 2,5000 delegates in attendance including Mary Kay Olashuk, a resident of Follansbee and a member of the Weirton Kiwanis Club. Poly Lat of the Philippines was elected president for 2018-19; Daniel Vigneron of Lyxembourg, president-elect; and Art Riley of the Capital District USA, vice president. An amendment to allow a 50 percent family discount fell short of the two-thirds majority vote needed for passage. A report on the world service project to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus showed that only 14 of the targeted 39 countries remain to be declared tetanus free. Kiwanis partners with UNICEF on this project, which is administered by the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, the 501(c)(3) component of Kiwanis International. The 104th international convention will be held June 27-30 in Orlando, Fla. A 31-year member of Kiwanis, Olashuk is the lieutenant governor of the Division 1 clubs in Weirton, Wellsburg and Wheeling. She has attended 20 consecutive international conventions. With Olashuk, center, are, from left, Ted Streit, past governor; Bracken Streit; Sam Payne, governor-elect; and Gov. Nathaniel Kyle.
