Foundation sponsoring suicide

loss group for survivors

BURGETTSTOWN — The Chuckie Mahoney Memorial Foundation is sponsoring a Suicide Loss Group for Survivors at no cost to those attending.

It will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of every month at the Burgettstown Community Library, located at 2 Kerr St., Burgettstown.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 31, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend from any surrounding community, according to Debi Mahoney.

“The foundation is in honor of my son, Chuck, who took his life at the age of 20 while a student at Allegheny College in Meadville in 2002,” Mahoney noted. The foundation has a Facebook page and website.

“Part of our mission is to help, educate and inform on issues of mental health. We have become advocates,” she noted.

“My youngest son Joe has an MSW from Pitt and works in mental health. I have a master’s in education from the from the University of Dayton and worked as a guidance counselor for 16 years at Weir High School, and as survivors ourselves, we are facilitating the group.”

Mahoney added, “It is not to take the place of counseling or therapy, but to give survivors a safe place to come and share their grief, which can be a very lonely road.”
