Weirton Woman’s Club welcomes essay winners

WEIRTON — The Weirton Woman’s Club enjoyed an ice cream social at its April meeting at the Mary H. Weir Public Library. President Diana Durst welcomed members and guest Carol Hicks.

First Vice President Sandra Robbins gave the inspiration and led members in opening exercises.

Students who won the Pearl Buck Essay Contest were introduced by Barbara Raynolds, program chairman. They were James Todd, $100, Madonna High School; Hailey Danner, second place, $75, Weir High School; and Fernando Mastrantoni, third place, $50, Weir High School. The students, who attended along with their parents, read their essay for the club.

Aggie Monezis, co-chairman of the spring fling held by the Weirton Kiwanis Club for the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop, received donations of $50 each from the club’s art department, garden department and literary department for the annual event.

Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer. The spring workshop will be held April 28 at Christ United Methodist Church in Wheeling, it was announced.

The art department will meet at noon on April 23 at Undo’s. The program will feature Nancy Wright, retired art teacher from Madonna High School.

The annual book review luncheon is Sunday at Undo’s, beginning at 2 p.m. Molly Mossor will portray Natalie Wood.

The annual teddy bear luncheon will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 26 at the Mary H. Weir Public Library. All area children are invited. There is no fee to participate.

The first vice president for the new term was not presented at the March meeting. No candidate was available, so Delores Azzarello accepted and was elected. All new officers will be installed at the May 5 closing meeting at Williams Country Club.

At the state convention in March at the Greenbrier, several members were honored with awards, including: Patty Kaminski, first place for large painting and miniatures; Kay Mortimer, first place for quilt and a quillow; Lea Shirer, first place for a baby quilt and third place for a patriotic quilt; Lois Flemm, arts, third place; Patty Kaminiski, conservation, second place; club officers for leadership, second place, tie; “1734,” Enid Williams, chairman, second place; Barbara Raynolds, chairman, Pearl S. Buck, first place and best overall; and Enid Williams, women’s history and resource center, first place and best overall clubs.

The new 2018-20 state officers were installed at the convention with Pamela McCoy the new state president. Supporting West Virginia’s children’s hospitals will be her state project for her term.

The new Northern District president is Diana Durst. Board members are Shirley DeLuca, education; Molly Mossor, communication; Enid Williams, W.Va. Clubwoman magazine and advertising; Jeanne Amidon, international outreach; and Helen Gibson, historian and president’s special project.
