MLK choir rehearsals

scheduled for Saturday

STEUBENVILLE — The Martin Luther King Memorial Mass Choir will rehearse on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at Emmanuel Church of God in Christ, located at 128 S. Fifth St.

The Children’s MLK Choir will rehearse at 4 p.m.

Super Bowl Eve United Way

Tailgate Party is Saturday

WEIRTON — The seventh-annual Super Bowl Eve United Way Tailgate Party will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse in Burgettstown.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the event that will include music, free food and free draft beer. Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $25 per person at the door. For tickets, call the Weirton United Way at (304) 748-7213 or purchase them at First Choice America Credit Union.

There also will be a drawing for a $1,500 VISA gift card. Tickets for that drawing, courtesy of First Choice America and WTOV 9, are $5.

Attendees, who must be 21 and older, are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL apparel. All proceeds benefit the Weirton United Way Super Bowl Fundraiser.

Ash Wednesday fish fry

at Brilliant American Legion

BRILLIANT — The Brilliant American Legion Post 573, 210 Market St., will hold a fish fry on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fish sandwiches will be $6, and fish dinners will be available for $8. Dinners come with bread, french fries and cole slaw.

Lasagna dinner fundraiser

set for Feb. 11 at Jewett VFD

JEWETT — The Jewett Volunteer Fire Department will host a fundraiser homemade baked lasagna dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 11.

The meal includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage, The dinner cost is $10 for adult and $6 for children.

The fire department is located at 208 W. Main St.

Endurance run in February

to benefit autism center

TRIADELPHIA — Hoorah 2 Heroes will hold its third-annual Hillraiser Challenge, an endurance run to benefit the Augusta Levy Learning Center, from 6 p.m. Feb. 24 to 6 a.m. Feb. 25.

The center helps youth with autism from throughout the Ohio Valley with academic, communication and independent living skills.

Check-in will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 705 Distribution Road for the run, which will involve four-person relay teams.

Awards will be given to the male, female and mixed teams with the most laps, the male and female with the fastest lap and the most determined member.

The Hillraiser Brand, a coin mount, will be presented to teams completing more than four laps, and all participants will receive a commemorative patch.

C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc. St. Paddy’s

fundraiser set for March 16

CHESTER — C.H.A.N.GE. Inc. will hold its 14th annual St. Paddy’s Fest fundraiser March 16 at Mountaineer’s The Harv.

Tickets are $50 each, which includes dinner and entertainment by dance band No Bad Juju and the Macdonald Pipe Band.

Proceeds will go to various services provided by the community action agency.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the event, which will include appetizers, dinner served at 6 p.m. and various drawings.

Judy Raveaux, chief executive officer of C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc. said, “This is our 14th year hosting this fundraiser and every year, we’ve been able to not only meet our fundraising goals, but we’ve continued to grow our attendance and incorporate something new each year for our guests to enjoy. I can’t stress how thankful we are for the community, sponsors and donors who help make this event possible. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Antonio Meucci Lodge

members to meet Feb. 13

WEIRTON — The Antonio Meucci Lodge held its annual Christmas party Dec. 12 at Undo’s with President Regina Truax welcoming members and guests.

Guests included Dino and Pat Rossi, Deanna and Mike Hvizdak, Donna Kolanko, Albert Veltri, Richard and Joyce Dobbs and Tom and Liz Beecroft.

A sit-down dinner was served and included members’ homemade desserts and pastries. Italian and Christmas favorites were performed by Rick Pastre, who played the accordion. Members performed their annual “Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Truax reminded members that 2018 dues are payable to Carol Valenti and that there would be no meeting in January. All members and guests received a door prize of wine, candy, a fruit basket, gift card or poinsettia. A number of businesses and individuals were thanked for their donations throughout the year.

Several bus tours, all of which are open to the public, were announced. They include: March 9, Wheeling Island Casino; April 19, “Jersey Boys,” Capitol Theater, Wheeling; April 20, Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh; April 28, Rock ‘n Roll Doo Wop, Capitol Theater, Wheeling; and May 14-16, “Jesus” at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, Pa. WLU’s Joseph Horzempa is

a Professor of Year candidate

WEST LIBERTY — Joseph Horzempa, associate professor of biology at West Liberty University, once again has been named as one of five finalists for West Virginia Professor of the Year by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia.

Stephen Greiner, WLU president, said, “We are immensely proud of Joe for being picked two years in a row for this outstanding honor. It recognizes him for his strong teaching and laboratory research skills that our students benefit from daily. I wish him well as he competes for this well-deserved prize.”

The Professor of the Year will be announced at an awards banquet on April 12 in Charleston, where the winner and other finalists will be recognized. The winner will receive $10,000, while a runner-up will receive a smaller cash prize.

Since joining the WLU faculty in 2011, Horzempa has secured more than $2.2 million in grants for his studies, and he and his students have been working to develop new antibiotics and vaccines related to the bacterium Francisella tularensis.

His work has been published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and many other scholarly journals.

Named WLU’s professor of the year by the student body in 2016, he is director of the school’s new master’s in biology program.

Horzempa earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the California University of Pennsylvania and his doctoral degree from Duquesne University.

Craft class for adults being

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold a craft class for adults and young adults at 5 p.m. Feb. 8.

Participants will create a Snoopy tied-fleece pillow that may be used as a Valentine gift.

Historical movie to be shown

at Follansbee Branch Library

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee Branch Library will show PG-13 rated film “Victoria & Abdul” at noon on Feb. 9.

The film is based on a book by Shrabani Basu about the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria and a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.

Wine, beer-tasting event to aid American Cancer Society

FOLLANSBEE — The Brooke-Hancock Relay for Life Pennies from Heaven Team will hold a wine and craft beer-tasting event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Follansbee Community House.

The cost is $15 per person or $25 for two, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

There will be appetizers, a Chinese auction, 50-50 and other drawings.
