WEIRTON — “Volunteers Live Longer” is the motto for volunteers at the Community Bread Basket, according to program Administrator Tara Sheperd, who notes the organization needs “more volunteers to help with the day-to-day business of the organization.”

Located at 3501 West St., the Community Bread Basket is a 501(c)(3) that was established by the Weirton Ministerial Association in 2002 and incorporated in 2007. There are 15 covenant churches that support the financial needs of the organization.

“Community Bread Basket is a cooperative outreach fulfilling Christ’s call to love, service and justice. We seek to fulfill our mission through providing basic resources and services; treating people with dignity and respect; promoting self-sufficiency; providing opportunities for service; enhancing the cooperation of area churches; and collaboration with all agencies and services,” according to promotional information.

It serves those in need in Brooke and Hancock counties.

Volunteers are needed on a daily basis to count, weigh and stock shelves and pack baskets in advance for deliveries to shut-ins. They also are needed to pick up donated food at local supermarkets and to weigh and stock the food in the basement of Community Bread Basket. Additionally, volunteers are needed each Friday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to distribute the collected food.

The Community Bread Basket also has a Gabriel Project, which provides donated clothing to children from birth to age 5, and provides utility assistance as long as there is funding available.

“If you have a few free hours and would like to make an impact on the good work that goes on at Community Bread Basket, you can call (304) 748-7595 or come to 3501 West St.,” said Jim Pauchnik, board member.
