Scio VFD Auxiliary

planning ‘Burger Night’

SCIO — The Scio Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will host “Burger Night” from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at the R.J. Spike Fire Hall, located at 318 W. Main St., Scio.

The menu will include fresh burgers off the grill with the works, fresh cut fries and a drink. The cost is $6. Patrons can dine in or get carryout.

Charity festival, car and bike show Saturday in Weirton

WEIRTON — Weirton Covenant Church, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., will host its annual charity festival and car and bike show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The event is a fundraiser for World Help, a Christian humanitarian organization that serves the physical and spiritual needs of people in impoverished communities around the world.

Vendors will be on site to offer a variety of products and services, while the church will be preparing a variety of food, including barbecued ribs, panini sandwiches, atomic red hots, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, bean soup, funnel cakes and apple dumplings. The church basement will be the site of a craft and bake sale as well as a class on making dolls.

Outdoor activities will include bouncy rides, cornhole toss, car and bike show and a concert featuring a variety of singers. A highlight of the day will be a drawing for an automobile.

It’s “Appy Hour” at the library on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. when a library assistant will show patrons “some cool apps for personal use and for fun.” An appetizer will be served. Register in advance.

CVS will administer flu shots from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10. Vaccination is for anyone age 7 and older. CVS will have quadrivalent shots specially manufactured for the 2017-18 flu season and a high-dose version recommended for the 65 and over population. Patrons should provide medical and prescription insurance cards the day of the event. There is no cost for the shot, as everything will be billed to insurance through CVS. In the event the insurance will not cover it, CVS will cover the cost.

Children: Kids’ Game Night will be held Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Play games on Wii, Playstation and XBOX360.

Babygarten, for parents with children birth to 2, will be held Oct. 11 at 11:30 a.m. This is a lap-sit program that involves rhymes, books and songs to help babies with language development. No registration is required.

Play and Learn, for parents with children birth to 4, will be held Oct. 9 at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Play and Learn is an hour-long play session and introduces children to the library at an early age. No registration is needed.

Brooke County libraries

to show action films

The Brooke County Library in Wellsburg will show the PG-13 rated underwater thriller “47 Meters Down” at noon Oct. 13 and the Follansbee Branch Library will show the PG-13 rated film, “Wonder Woman,” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Preserving family history

focus of Newell workshop

NEWELL — The Tri-State Genealogical and Historical Society will hold a workshop designed to teach different ways of preserving family history and making family history into gifts.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 the TSGHS Research Room, 717 Washington St., Lower Level, Newell. The cost is $15.

Colleen Waggle will teach scrapbooking skills, and participants will be able to make one or two scrapbook page designs. Attendees should bring photographs or documents they would like to include on a scrapbook page. Originals will be copied for use on the pages.

Karen Stewart will demonstrate how to make jewelry from photos. The jewelry is made of polymer clay, and the photos are transferred onto the clay. If time allows, there also will be a demonstration on transferring slides, 8mm and Super 8mm film to digital.

All supplies are included, and a light lunch will be served. Questions can be directed to Karen at (330) 853-7842.

All workshop proceeds will be used to support keeping the research room open and available to the public.

Neon Knights, Smooth Country

to entertain at Country Friends

COLLIERS — Country Friends will host the Neon Knights on Friday at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

Smooth Country will entertain on Saturday.

The doors open at 6 p.m., and the dance starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. for both events. There is a $5 cover charge per person on dance nights.

Mondays are open mic, which begins at 6 p.m. The doors open at 4 p.m., and the covered-dish meal is at 5 p.m. There is no cover charge on Mondays, but donations are appreciated.

Patrons of any of the events can bring a covered dish if they desire. Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christian friendship and brotherly love through music.
