St. Joseph the Worker plans golf tourney, festival

WEIRTON — St. Joseph the Worker Church is gearing up for its Italian Festival and Twilight Golf Tournament next weekend.

John Dovec and Walter Ruszkowski are co-chairs of the events, which are sponsored by the church’s pastoral council.

The twilight golf tournament will be held July 28 at Mountaineer Woodview Golf Course, beginning at 3 p.m. The cost is $50 per golfer, and prizes will be awarded.

The Italian Festival will be held from noon to 8 p.m. July 30 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds, Kings Creek Road, Weirton, and feature a variety of Italian cuisine. Food prices will vary.

Admission is $5 per car to the festival which will include special desserts; games for children, including inflatables; bingo; a Chinese auction; drawings for baskets; and 50-50 drawings throughout the day.

New attractions include special vendors and crafters with a special attraction being the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce Challenge Bocce Tournament.

The festival also will include live entertainment by Fulvio Ranni and Sal Evola.

Ranni started playing the accordion at age 8 in Abruzzo, Italy, and by 13 was playing at weddings. He studied piano at the Conservatory in Parma, North Italy, and moved to Switzerland in 1981 to enroll in jazz school in Zurich. From 1993-96 he toured north Europe with Made in Italy, a dance band. In 1996 he arrived in the United States to begin his solo career in the Philadelphia area and continues to entertain at private parties, weddings and festivals.

Evola started playing the guitar in Sicily at age 7 and by 12 had his own band playing at weddings and competitions. He began touring Italy with the band Black Mist and performed on national Italian television. He arrived in the United States in the early 1980s and has been performing ever since.

The festival will include 10 opportunities to win up to $10,000 with the last seven drawings on July 30.
