The Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Steubenville honored its 2017 Valley scholars May 7, presenting $7,400 in scholarship money and framed scholarship certificates to 14 students during a dinner ceremony featuring entertainment by the Ron Retzer Trio. Scholarship winners received either the local Valley of Steubenville award or the national award, the Leon Abbott Scholarship. Scottish Rite Masons emphasize fraternal relations and philosophy within Freemasonry. Their mission is to be a fraternity that cares for their members. The Valley of Steubenville is one of 109 geographical units of the Northern Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite with more than 360,000 members in a 15-state region. Honoree students on hand were, seated, from left, Corinne Connor, Paige Benline and Brittany Jenkins, Edison High School; second row, Megan Hutchman and Shelby Hilbert; and back, Coleton Benline, Anthony Carpico and William Snyder, Steubenville High School. Other recipients were Emily Boban, Karli Celestine, Brooke High School; Matthew Craven, Madeline Metcalf and Danielle Schell, Buckeye Online School for Success.
