Hancock shelter involved in special campaign

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Animal Shelter is joining shelters across West Virginia to find a home for every shelter animal this holiday season.

“The Home For The Holidays” campaign began Nov. 25 and runs through Dec. 24, according to shelter Director Nichole Felouzis. “We are offering reduced adoption fees and other specials to encourage adopters to help us clear the shelters.”

The special holiday adoption rates for dogs is $75 and $25 for cats. The shelter also is offering gift certificates for the adoption of an animal of their choice. An approved pre-adoption application is required for any of these offers.

“The gift certificates can be purchased by people who want to give a loved one the gift of a pet for Christmas,” said Felouzis. “They pay the adoption fee and fill out the pre-adoption application for the recipient. Once the pre-adoption form is approved, they receive a gift certificate for an animal of the adopter’s choice.” Felouzis explained that the pre-adoption application is useful to insure responsible adoptions and to reduce impulse adoptions.

People can make donations to the shelter in honor of or in memory of a person or a beloved pet. The person or their family will receive a written acknowledgement of the gift. Cage sponsorships in honor of or in memory of a person or pet also are  available for $50 for a dog’s cage and $30 for a cat’s cage. These sponsorships help pay the cost of an animal’s food and medical needs for one month.

The shelter also is selling copies of Janis Kell’s book “Sunny And Friends.” This children’s book tells the adoption story of several animals from the animal’s point of view. The price is $12 per book with sale proceeds to support the shelter.

“We are really excited to be part of this statewide promotion,” said Felouzis. “It is a great opportunity for people to help the shelter and to give all the animals a home for Christmas.”

The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The shelter is closed to the public on Sundays. For information call (304) 387-4102 or to request a link to the pre-adoption form, e-mail hancockcountyanimalshelterwv@gmail.com. The shelter also has pages on Facebook and Petfinder.com.
