‘Love Light Tree Service’

at Wintersville church

WINTERSVILLE — Wintersville Community Chapel will hold its annual “Love Light Tree Service” beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday.

“This is a service to honor and remember those who have had an impact on our lives through the years,” a church spokesperson said of the service that is open to the public and will feature music by the Chrisagis Brothers. They will be providing the music for the evening. This service is open to the public. A love offering will be taken for the Chrisagis Brothers Ministry.

Serve Others Circle hears

‘We Weren’t Poor’ program

STEUBENVILLE — The Serve Others Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons met Nov. 15 at the Prime Time Senior Center for a noon luncheon meeting.

Ruth Ann McLaughlin led the circle in opening exercises and readings, including “Blessing for a Holiday Meal” by Holly McKissick.

Lucille Smith, secretary, gave the secretary and attendance reports. The circle will determine donations at the December meeting.

McLaughlin presented the program with a reading of “We Weren’t Poor, We Just Didn’t Have any Money” by Carl Hurley, who grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the 1940s and 1950s. The Great Depression had ended, and most homes had central heating but lacked plumbing.  Life was a day-to-day but parents taught their children right from wrong, attended church on Sunday and found reason to be thankful.

Riverview UMC to host

Christmas concert

TORONTO — “Christmas with Splendid Sounds and Their Friends” will be presented Dec. 11 at Riverview United Methodist Church, 107 N. River Ave., beginning at 3 p.m.

Splendid Sound is made up of Jim Ray, David Meyer, Chelsea Clegg and Craig McCasland. Other featured performers are Anna Unice, Marla Inderbitzen, Jason Ray, George Melhorn, Bryan Ray, Ed Kovacik, Burl Jernigan and Ron Knapp.

The offering will benefit local charities.

Special advent concerts

at Francicsan University

STEUBENVILLE — The Schola Cantorum Franciscana and the Franciscan University Chorale will celebrate the birth of Christ with the service of Nine Lessons and Carols.

The annual Advent event starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was developed in late 19th-century England as a prelude to the Christmas Mass at night and tells the story of the Incarnation from the fall of Adam to the birth of Christ through scripture, prayer and music.

The schola and chorale, directed by Nicholas Will and George Melhorn, respectively, will perform traditional carols and musical pieces, including those by Bach, Handel and Poston.

The event is free and open to the public.

On Sunday, the Schola Cantorum Franciscana and the Padre Pio Academy Schola will perform medieval and renaissance music for Advent, followed by compline, or evening prayer, at 8 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Steubenville. This event is free and open to the public.

Special Christmas music

at Wintersville church

WINTERSVILLE — A “Lessons & Carols in Brass” is the program title of a Christmas brass ensemble performance to be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at Wintersville Baptist Church located at 617 Fernwood Road, Wintersville.

The free concert is open to the public. A dessert reception will follow the program.

Seminar on Dec. 10

at Empire church

EMPIRE — River Christian Fellowship Church at 183 Nessley St., Empire, is offering a free seminar titled “The Suffering, Loss and Trauma of Addictions,” which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

It will be presented by Molly McNmara, founder of “His Whole House.

A love offering will be received.

Christmas bazaar in Bethany

BETHANY — Bethany Memorial Church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9:00 am to 2:00 p.m. today.

Among items for sale will be locally made pottery, hand-carved cutting boards, Rada knives, Christmas primitives, handmade lotions and soaps, butterfly jewelry and crafts, hand-carved olive wood Holy Land figures and baked goods. Bethany College students representing Relay for Life will be available for gift-wrapping. There also will be live music and food for breakfast and lunch for sale.
