Stratton VFD reviving turkey shoot fundraisers as of Sunday

STRATTON – The Stratton Volunteer Fire Department has revived an old fall tradition and will be holding “Turkey Shoot” fundraisers beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Stratton Park.

There will be shoots for hams, bacon and turkeys. Twelve-, 16- and 20-gauge shotguns may be used. “If you don’t have your own shot gun, several will be available if you need to borrow one,” a news release notes.

Shoots will continue at 9 a.m. every other Sunday — Oct. 9 and 23 and Nov. 13 — until Thanksgiving. The concession stand will be open.

Annual A.D. White History

Fair to be held Saturday

AVELLA, Pa. — The second-annual A.D. White History Fair, including a book signing by local author Kathryn Slasor, will be held Saturday at the Avella Fire Hall.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. for the event, which will coincide with a car cruise at the fire hall, and food will be provided by the women of St. Michael Catholic Church.

Slasor will be signing copies of her book, “Under the Sugar Tree,” which includes tales of human interest as well as local history.

Country Friends Band to

entertain at Memorial Hall

COLLIERS — Country Friends Band will entertain Saturday at Memorial Hall located at 67 Old Police Lodge Road. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the dance begins at 7 p.m.

Mondays and Fridays are covered-dish dinners and open mic nights, and the last Friday of each month is gospel night, with a donation going to a local church or charity. The doors open at 4 p.m., the meal begins at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m.

WEIRTON — The Weirton Steel Management Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Giovanni’s Restaurant.

All members and former members are invited to attend the dinner and social time.

Brooke library book club

scheduled to meet Thursday

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library’s book club will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot.

Attendees will receive the October book, “Letters of a Woman Homesteader” by Elinore Pruitt Stewart.  The club is free and open to the public.

State humane society director coming to area on Oct. 9

WINTERSVILLE — Corey Roscoe, Ohio’s director for the Humane Society of the United States, will be the featured speaker during a 1 p.m. presentation Oct. 9 in the community room of the Jefferson County Animal Shelter, 200 Airport Road, Wintersville.

A native of Ohio, Roscoe will be discussing new Ohio laws that protect animals and pending legislation.

“She will be helping us to learn and understand how we can strengthen legal protections and enact new ordinances for animal protection at the local level,” according to a news release. Roscoe has dedicated nearly her entire career in the animal protection field, working both at the local and national level. Involved in both legislative and grassroots efforts she has worked on the California and Ohio ballot initiatives to eliminate the most egregious forms of farm animal confinement and has been a speaker at state and national conferences.

Roscoe resides in Columbus and spends her free time volunteering with nonprofit organizations.

The presentation is free to all interested in animal protection.

Tri-State Winemakers Club

having wine-tasting on Oct. 22

STEUBENVILLE — Derek Sliday presided at the Tri-State Winemakers Club meeting held Sept. 8.

Members were reminded about the next wine-tasting, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Hellenic Hall at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville.

The clubs by-laws have been updated and all members will be receiving a copy, it was announced.

The club will be participating in a project to send Christmas stockings to soldiers.

A discussion was held on filtering sediment and the different results that members have had.

Lou and Marge Stock served as meeting host.

The Oct. 13 meeting will be hosted by Wilson and Linda Cole and John and Norma Kovach.

Participants sought for

Oct. 15 corn hole tournament

FOLLANSBEE — A corn hole tournament will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 to benefit the Follansbee American Legion Post, local participation in Boys State and the Follansbee Peewee Football League.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. for the event, which will be held at the post’s headquarters at 998 Main St.

The registration fee is $20 for each two-player team before Oct. 8 and $25 after that. The winner will receive a corn hole board.

Area emergency departments, businesses and others are invited to form teams, with no limit to the number of teams they enter.

County council auxiliary scheduled to meet Wednesday

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at David Walker Post 274.

The meeting will include the installation of officers.

Online application, resume composition help offered

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee Branch Library will offer free help in composing resumes with a computer and online job applications at 1 p.m. Oct. 1. Help will be provided by library employee Natalie Staffileno.
