EGCC to host Sen. Lou Gentile Energy Scholarship recognition gathering Tuesday

STEUBENVILLE — Eastern Gateway Community College will hold a recognition gathering for the recipients of the state Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, Energy Scholarship at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Pugliese Training Center at the Steubenville campus.

Jimmie Bruce, EGCC president, said that scholarships in the energy sector are particularly valuable with the opportunities available in the Ohio Valley and cover a broad range of career paths.

“We just want to get everyone in one place to thank Senator Gentile for his generosity,” Bruce said. “The shale industry is going to be a huge part of our economy in the years to come, and these scholarships will help the recipients position themselves to be successful now and deep into their futures.”

Gentile proposed and obtained passage of a provision in Section 369.314 of Amended Substitute House Bill 64 to establish the Energy Sector Scholarship Pilot Program to benefit EGCC students pursuing certificates and degrees in the shale and related energy industries. The funds are administered through the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The scholarship was established in 2015, and $100,000 is to be distributed in 2016 and 2017 to fund the scholarships.

The 2016 recipients are: Courtney D. Jarman, Toronto; Samantha M. Petznick, Rayland;  Jacob S. Sutton and Michael D. Watkins, both of Mingo Junction; and Laura Zornan, Warren.
