Healthy Life Workshop topic

to be ‘A Change of Heart’

CADIZ — Carol A. Teter, nurse educator at Harrison Community Hospital, will present a program titled “A Change of Heart: Lower Your Risk for Cardiovascular Disease” at the Healthy Life Workshop to be held in the hospital cafeteria from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

In 2013, one in three deaths annually were attributed to heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, according to the American Heart Association.

Some topics to be discussed will be the role of blood pressure, diet and exercise in heart health, signs and symptoms of heart disease and preventive measures to decrease risk. According to a news release, many women think that breast cancer is the leading cause of death for them when it’s actually heart disease.

“Women’s heart disease often presents with symptoms that are not the “classic” ones we’ve come to know. Those will be presented along with myths about women and heart disease. This workshop is appropriate for men as well,” the news release notes.

On Oct. 6, Dr. Kara O’Karma, gynecologist, will lead a Healthy Life Workshop on “Osteoporosis: The Bone Thief.”

“This often undiagnosed and undertreated disease is a leading cause of disability in women,” the news release indicates. “Ways to reduce the risk of developing and treating osteoporosis will be offered.” Osteopenia, bone loss that is an earlier stage of osteoporosis, also will be included in the discussion.

The free, educational Healthy Life Workshops are held the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the hospital’s cafeteria. They feature physicians, nurses, dieticians and other health care professionals covering a wide range of topics such as diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease and other health issues.

Light refreshments are served, and reservations are not necessary.
