Blackmoor Ladies Monday evening league participants played a three-gal scramble on Aug. 25.

First-place winners were Yuko Atwell, Lori Defallo and Denise Augustine. Second-place winners were Cheryl Black, Christina Rock and Renee Morelli.

Third place went to Tammy Cox, Linda Caputo and Lucy Karaan. Tammy Cox had long drive on hole No. 8, and Yuko Atwell had closest to the pin on the second shot on hole No. 4.


Cadiz Women’s Golf Association play of the day on Aug. 27 was “No Ifs, Ands or Putts” where members subtract their total putts from their gross score.

Hostess Ann Milleson announced the winners as Nep Rowland in A flight, Kathy Smith in B flight and Donna Griffin in C flight. Winners of the low putt pot were Peg Buchanan and Ann Milleson.

The club championship tournament was played on Aug. 6 and 13 with winners being A flight, Billie Stanwick and runner-up, Nep Rowland. Winner in B flight was Kathy Smith, and the C flight winner was Glenda Sensel. Their awards will be presented at the season closing dinner on Sept. 24.

The hostess for Wednesday will be Peg Buchanan.


After a two-week competition featuring 36 holes of stroke play, Kim Criss won the 2014 club championship of the Steubenville Country Club Women’s Golf Association.

Criss came into the second week of the tournament two strokes back and played a steady final round to win by one stroke over past champion YangJa Koh.

The final 18-hole round saw several carts of spectators following the close match between Criss and Koh. Criss had a one-stroke lead coming into the final hole and held on to capture her first club championship with a 36-hole total of 178.

The championship tournament also featured a winner and runner-up in flights. Club professional John Denholm directed the event and announced the following winners – First flight: Koh, winner, and Marilyn Kenny, runner-up; second flight: Charlene Freshwater, winner, and Theresa Metcalf, runner-up.

Following play, a celebration was held in the clubhouse grill room featuring a champagne toast to Criss and the flight winners. They will receive special recognition at the closing day awards luncheon in September.

Prior to play, club manager Amanda Smathers presented each golfer with a Starbucks iced coffee beverage and a gift bag containing chips, an energy bar, hand sanitizer and moisturizer. At the luncheon, each golfer received from Smathers a chocolate bar in a Steubenville Country Club logo wrapper.

In addition to the club championship, a gross and net game in flights was the weekly event. Winners were: First flight, Criss, low gross and putts, and Kenny, low net; and second flight: Freshwater, low gross and putts, and Metcalf, low net.

On Aug. 27 a 3-3-3 tournament was the weekly event for the Steubenville Country Club Women’s Golf Association with Marilyn Kenny as hostess. After play, the women chose three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s for scoring, and one-half handicap was used to determine the winners.

In the first flight, Kenny won first prize and putts with Kim Criss taking second place. Shelle Pentes took first place in the second flight, while Charlene Freshwater and Theresa Metcalf tied for second place. Pentes, Freshwater and Metcalf all tied for the putting prize.

Chip-ins were recorded by Freshwater and Metcalf on the second hole and YangJa Koh on the fifth hole. They shared the money cup which had carried over from the previous week.

Nine-hole winners were Carole Peterson, low gross and putts and Dotty Tegano, low net.

This week’s game will be a team event. Players are asked to report to the pro shop at 8:30 a.m. for a 9 a.m. start.


The Town and Country Women Golf League had its annual Away Day. played at Highland Springs Golf Course, Wellsburg, on Aug. 14.

The low gross winners for each flight were: A, Laura Froehlich; B, Patty Saccoccia; and C, Irene Vaja. Long drive on hole No. 2 were: A, Froehlich; B, Edie Higgins; and C, no winner. Long drive on hole No 9 were: A, Froehlich; B, Saccoccia; and C, Vaja. Closest to the pin on hole No. 5 were: A, Wanda Retzer; B, Saccoccia; and C, Vaja.

On Aug. 21, Town and Country Women’s Golf League had a medal game at Spring Hills Golf Course.

The winners were: Low gross: A, Laura Froehlich and Wanda Retzer; B, Pat Zorne; and C, Jane Myers. Lowest putts: A, Froehlich; B, Patty Saccoccia and Zorne; and C, Jane Myers. The Williams Ladies Golf Association held the annual “Ladies Club Championship,” which is a two-week grueling competition, especially in what was high humidity the last two weeks.

Maribeth Alia is the new ladies champion this year and a first-time winner for the club championship. Arlia eagled hole No. 9 during the competition and made a clutch putt on hole No. 18 to unseat the longtime previous champion, Priscilla Mavrich, who lost by one stroke. Mavrich became the club championship runner-up, also quite a fete.

The second flight championship winner was Erikka Buracchio with a two-week low gross score, and Rita Kohn took the second flight winner’s seat in low net.

In the first week “Game With-In the Championship,” the winner of low net in first flight was Jennie Epifano with a score of 68, and second place was Linda Staffilino coming in with a 75.

Second flight winner was a tie with Erikka Buracchio and Phyllis Phillips with a score of 73.

Third flight winner in first place was Rita Wickham with a low net of 78 and Kay Mascio taking second place with a score of 80.

Three women shared the “Pot of Gold” with Alicia Myers chipping in on hole No. 1, Mascio with her chip-in on hole No. 5 and Wickham on hole No. 8. Second week low net winner in first place was Mavrich with a score of net 73 and a tie in second place with a net 76 was Arlia and Buracchio.

Second-place low net winner was Wickham with a net score of 84.

Assistant Pro Jason Smoljanovich set up and figured the tee-off times and winners for both weeks of play.

Regular play resumes this week at 9 a.m. Players are asked to call the pro shop to sign up.


The Woodview Women’s 18-Hole Association along with the men’s association hosted a mixed scramble on Aug. 14. There were 52 participants playing in this event.

Finishing in first place was the team of Charlotte McCoy, Tom Cooper, Manny Barkhurst and Bob Wade. There was a tie for second place which was determined by a scorecard playoff resulting in the team of Erin Ankrum, Gary Virtue, Joe McFarland and Frank Hanselman placing second, and finishing in third place was the team of Janice Whitaker, Dave Ferrari, Dave Nixon and Mike Konnovitch.

Closest to the pin prize winners were Andy Gulish on No. 5, Jim Torrance on No. 8, Dave Ferrari on No.15 and Dave Nixon on No. 17. There were five good team skins won by Chuck Lehman’s team on No. 4 and No. 18; Tom Cooper’s team on No. 5; Dave Ferrari’s team with an eagle on No. 11; and Clark Steven’s team with an eagle on No. 16.

Winner of the 50/50 was Yangja Koh.

After the scramble, a picnic luncheon was held with the men’s association providing the main entree and the women’s association providing the side dishes, desserts and drinks. Janice and Jim Torrance were the main coordinators of the event.

Blackmoor Monday Ladies Golf participants played a “Throw Out Your Worst Hole” event on Aug. 18.

The event winner was Lori Defallo.

Cheryl Black took low putts for the day. Lucy Karran had a chip-in on hole No. 4 and also took closest to the pin on the second shot on hole No. 8.

Denise Augustine took long drive on hole No. 4.

Christina Rock and Yuko Atwell both took the mystery prize.

Everyone is welcome to play on Mondays at 5 p.m.

Spring Hill Ladies Golf League played a Texas scramble on July 31.

The winners were the team consisting of Cindy Montgomery, Mary Alice Myers, Linda Caputo and Eleanor Kindsvatter with a 35.

The second-place team was consisted of Marge Alpino, Judy Galbraith, Brenda McClosky,and Dru Fleishour with a 37.

Long drive were: A flight, Terri Barkley; B flight, Linda Caputo; and C flight, Cindy Montgonery.

The 50/50 winner was Cindy Montgomery.

A meeting followed

The members sold 50/50 tickets for the drawing to be done July 31. Dan Stacey, club pro, pulled the winning number, and the winner was Charlie Corder, who donated the money back to the league.


The Steubenville Country Club Women’s Golf Association played the first round of the club championship which is a 36-hole stroke play tournament. This week will see the crowning of a club champion, runner-up and winners in two flights. After the first round, the scores are close enough to provide a thrilling finish to the tournament.

Along with the championship, a gross and net event in flights was played with Marilyn Kenny and Dianna Adams as chairmen. They announced the following winners at lunch following golf.

In the first flight, YangJa Koh took low gross and putts with Kim Criss winning low net. Second flight winners were Charlene Freshwater, low gross, and Theresa Metcalf, low net. Renee Morelli won putts in the second flight. Koh recorded a chip-in par on the first hole to take the money cup.

This week’s tee times will start at 9 a.m. Following play, a luncheon will be held in the clubhouse grill room to congratulate the winners and to celebrate the conclusion of a successful championship tournament.
