Wintersville club honors members

The GFWC/Ohio Woman’s Club of Wintersville wrapped up its final meeting of the 2013-14 club year in a very special way when members gathered for the May 15 luncheon and business meeting held at St. Florian Hall.

New officers for 2014-16 were installed by Mary Beth Allan, special recognition chairman of the “Honor Our Members” program where several members were singled out with kind words and cute gifts.

While Barbara Thermes will continue in her leadership as club president, she will be joined by Robbie Young, first vice president; Natalie Doty, second vice president; CarolynLee Barrett, recording secretary; Donna Phillips, corresponding secretary; and Joyce Palmer, treasurer.

Allan and Judy Anastasio, membership chairman, led the honors program that began with recognizing members with perfect attendance – Barbara Thermes, CarolynLee Barrett, Ella Jane Burns, Kathy Frey, Linda Nolf, Joyce Palmer, Sandy Santicola, Marjean Sizemore and June Sullivan.

–?Kathy Frey and Gloria Kotur were given certificates as two of five names drawn for gifts at the state convention in support of the GFWC/OFWC Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign. All members in the state signed pledge cards in support of it.

— Appreciation awards were presented to Aimee Jaros and Pauletta Sprochi for their work in organizing and putting together Chinese auction baskets for the club’s Holiday Splendor fundraiser. The baskets were a hit and a highlight.

— Carol Yaich was applauded for her work in documenting the club’s history with the photographs she takes and the scrapbooks she composes.

— Lil Ferguson was honored for her enthusiasm and expertise in making the club’s annual “Make It, “Bake It, Take It” auction a successful fundraiser. This year’s event raised $1,335.

— Joan Martinez was presented a container of jam because she’s kept the club out of them with her willingness to serve and not say “no” when asked to do something, including taking a car load of clothes to the state convention in Columbus for the “Dress for Success” project.

— Pat Perry and Eleanor Gache were honored as the two women having the second longest membership in the club, demonstrating loyalty and dedication. They joined in 1957. Last year the club honored Helen Reed, who joined in 1954.

— Kathy Frey was thanked for helping Marjean Sizemore prepare the monthly newsletter for mailing.

— As telephone committee chairman, Nancy Antill was thanked for her efforts in taking reservations for meetings and relaying messages as needed.

— Joyce Palmer was presented a pickle because Palmer wears many hats in the club, including being the treasurer, and without her, the club would “be in a pickle.”

— Marjean Sizemore, who was not in attendance, was named Clubwoman of the Year and will be honored at the September meeting. She is the newly elected state secretary of the GFWC/OFWC and just completed a term as its president.

All members were presented bookmarks with the club collect on the back.

Thermes presided at the May meeting that also was occasion to welcome two new members in Amy Atchison and Joyce Ryan Orlando.

CarolynLee Barrett gave the meditation and grace. Pat Daily chaired the hostesses committee that also included Carole Montgomery, Gloria Popp, Gloria Kotur, Pat Keller and Nancy Smith.

Club member Cheryl Taylor gave a report on having attended the state convention where a well-received presentation was given on the club’s “Make It, Bake It, Take It” auction.

The club was presented the state traveling President’s Award at the state convention held in Columbus in April. The OFWC Project Award was for the club’s third-place finish in the state for most outstanding international affairs project, which involved clipping coupons to send to military bases.
