Dorothy Jones Hawkes of the Woman’s Club of New Cumberland has been elected president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-WV Northern District. She was formally installed at the Greenbrier Resort, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., in March.

The Northern District is comprised of clubs in Bethany, Follansbee, McMechen, Moundsville, New Cumberland, Warwood, Weirton and Wheeling.

Hawkes is a three-time past president of the Woman’s Club of New Cumberland and has been a member of the federation for 36 years, first as a member of the New Cumberland Young Woman’s Club, then the Woman’s Club of New Cumberland.

She also is a member of the New Cumberland Lion’s Club and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Weirton and the church’s St. Elizabeth’s Guild. She annually assists with the Hancock County Holiday House Tour.

Hawkes, who received a secretarial science degree in office management from the former Steubenville Business College, worked for Weirton Steel Corp. until her retirement in 1997.

She resides with her husband, George, and enjoys volunteering, working on crafts, reading and gardening.
