Knights host prom, awards ceremony for Special Olympians
May 4 was another special day for local athletes who were welcomed as honored guests at the Knights of Columbus Council No. 472 hall in Wintersville to enjoy an evening of dancing and dining.
It was all part of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Council’s 15th-annual prom, an event that included snacks, pop and hot dogs prepared by council volunteers and joined by Special Olympics chaperones who came bearing pizza. Disc jockey Ross Ivkovich provided music. The evening closed with every athlete who participated in the Special Olympics receiving a memento of the 2014 games.
Area 9 Special Olympics Treasurer Ruth Sperry was a guest along with her daughter, Robin Miller, and granddaughter, Emily Miller. Jane Bodo, Special Olympics coordinator, was on hand with chaperones Kathy Ferguson, Marie Lynn Zeigler, Heather Schumaker, Miranda Casto, Mike McGurn and Karen Aleksiejczyk.
D.L. Romel, Knights of Columbus chairman for the prom, thanked the many members, their families and friends who helped with the event, including Jim Marquis, Tom Ryan, Ron Fallert, Ric Fornal, Jane Barney, Shelby Marquis, Cindy Hoerchler, Joe Gabrielli, Cindy Gabrielli, Loretta Seese, Bob Olexia, Evelyn Romel and the Keith and Susie Bodo family.
Romel said he appreciates the council for hosting “the inspiring and heartwarming event. It is indeed an honor and pleasure to host this prom and awards ceremony every year.”
