Wellsburg Lions to hold drawing dinner

WELLSBURG – Area residents are invited to an evening of food and fellowship during which they will have an opportunity to win one of many cash and other prizes while helping a cause whose reach extends from the local community throughout the world.

The Wellsburg Lions Club will hold its 19th-annual Elimination Drawing and Dinner May 3 at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, formerly known as the Wellsburg Fire Hall.

The club is selling 225 tickets at a cost of $65 each, which includes a buffet dinner for two and a chance to win one of more than $4,500 cash prizes and gift cards a variety of other prizes donated by local businesses.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with dinner, catered by Undo’s, at 7 p.m. The event is BYOB.

Tickets can be purchased from any member or by calling 737-1557 or 737-1212.

Paul Billiard, the group’s president, expressed thanks to the many area businesses that have donated cash or prizes for the event.

Proceeds will go to various community service projects undertaken by the club, including efforts to provide adequate eye care both locally and throughout the world.

The Wellsburg Lions and other Lions clubs in the state work with the West Virginia University Eye Institute to provide free vision screenings to children at West Virginia schools.

Through Lions International’s Sightfirst program, millions of dollars have been invested in the prevention and treatment in underdeveloped countries of illnesses that can lead to blindness. Though such diseases are curable, they are common, due to limited access to modern healthcare in such nations.

Locally the Wellsburg Lions also collect used eyeglasses that may be repaired and distributed to people in need of eyewear but unable to afford it. Used eyeglasses will be collected at the elimination drawing dinner.

The Lions also support projects involving local youth, including sponsoring Leo Clubs, community service clubs for students at Wellsburg Middle School and Brooke High School; and scholarships awarded each year to Brooke High School graduates.
