Adena Lions preparing for weekend minstrel show

Steve Sherer of Dover, Lions past international director, spoke on the history of Lions pins, how they got started and their purpose at the Adena Lions Club dinner meeting held at Myers Family Diner in Harrisville.

“The existence of the pins started many years ago by clubs wishing to promote their particular area,” he said. They were made of leather, plastic and other materials through the years and were meant for Lion members to save and have a keepsake. Now the pins are made of metal. After being in existence for a few years, the idea of state, district, club and candidates running for district governor blossomed. This encouraged many Lions to start buying pins and using them as a remembrance with other clubs, such as an international or state convention and other Lions-associated organizations.

Then came pin trading, an experience for traveling to Lions events to have something to remember, such as international and state conventions or other Lions-associated organizations to not only purchase pins but to trade them with other Lions throughout the world of Lionism.

Sherer explained some pins are made in a series to showcase different areas in a district or state. There are also a series of sports figures and even sight-saving dogs on pins.

The 64th-annual Lions minstrel show will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Buckeye West Elementary School in Adena. “Roarin’ through the Decades” is the theme for the show that will depict music and the demeanor of the years, bringing back memories of past generations.

Dustin Kinsey is the chairman. Other committee members are Karl Bowers, Drew Case, Denise Howell and Darrin Young. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The money raised goes toward community projects.

The club will be purchasing six flag poles to be erected as needed in the villages they represent. They are selling flags and brooms, with the light bulbs now all sold.

The district Lions convention will be held April 11-12 in New Philadelphia, when the parade of checks will be presented.
