Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church to host Lenten vesper service Sunday
Clergy and faithful from Upper Ohio Valley Orthodox churches and from parishes of the Serbian Orthodox Pittsburgh Deanery will visit Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 528 N. Fourth St. Steubenville, for a Lenten vesper service on Sunday.
The 5 p.m. service will begin the fifth week of Orthodox Lent. Lent, called the Great Fast by Orthodox Christians, prepares the faithful for the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Orthodox Christians celebrate Pascha, or Easter, together with other Christians this year on April 20.
The Orthodox Sunday Lenten vespers is a daily vesper service with parts of the compline service added. Lenten hymns are sung, and the Lenten prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian is said, accompanied by prostrations. Clergy change from bright to dark vestments in the middle of the service to signify the transition from the resurrectional brightness of Sunday to the somber weekday tone of the Lenten fast.
Responses will be sung by the church’s Petar Krstich Choir, and a homily will be offered by the Very Rev. Stevo Rocknage of St. Sava Church in McKeesport, Pa., who is a native of Steubenville.
A lenten supper prepared by the women of the church’s Vidovdan Circle of Serbian Sisters will follow.
The public is invited to all events.
