Dueling Pianos benefits humane society

This marks the third year for the Jefferson County Humane Society’s Dueling Pianos fundraiser, and this marks the third year that the event was a sellout, according to President Sally Wehr, who was thrilled with the support for the March 14 outing held at St. Florian Hall.

“This annual event is a fundraiser for our animal welfare programs, but it also is a morale boost for the people at the humane society,” Wehr said. “Many people attending comment to our board members or employees and tell us they adopted their pet from us and how well it is doing, or they express gratitude for what we have been able to accomplish at the county shelter,” Wehr said.

The money raised from the interactive evening of music will enable the JCHS to help many homeless or neglected animals, according to Wehr. “From day to day, we never know what is coming in through the doors of the shelter or what a humane officer may find on an investigation. Unfortunately, most of the animals that do come to us have some type of conditions or issues. We see everything from a few fleas to neglected, starving or injured animals,” she said.

Wehr said since signing an agreement with the commissioners to manage the animal shelter, the Jefferson County Animal Shelter now has the highest percentage of adoptions and the lowest percent of euthanasia than ever before.

The JCHS provides medications, vet care, food, grooming, equipment and love, according to Wehr. “We have an incredible staff that truly cares about each animal, and they often take on responsibilities above and beyond their job description to help an animal in need,” Wehr said.

The JCHS is made up of an all-volunteer board of directors that are “very hands-on” with both the animals and the direction of the organization. It was first incorporated in 1915 and “continues to this day to be a viable local charity that makes a difference,” Wehr said. “This is our yearly major fundraiser but everyday JCHS strives to make Jefferson County a better place for animals and people.”
