Same cause but new role for local cancer-fighting advocate

Kyle Elder, who has served as co-chair of the Steubenville Area Relay for Life sponsored by the Jefferson County Unit of the American Cancer Society, is going to continue the fight against cancer in a new capacity.

And it will mean his resignation as relay co-chair, an announcement he will make at Tuesday’s planning meeting at Eastern Gateway Community?College.

The Knoxville resident has accepted a full-time position with the American Cancer Society as its community events specialist to organize and recruit for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in Canton, Canfield and Steubenville.

“To work with ACS is a dream come true,” Elder said. “I get to turn my passion of fighting back against cancer into my career. I’m so incredibly honored and excited to begin working with them and begin this next chapter,” he said of the home-based job where he will travel to Canton, Canfield and Steubenville to recruit for and organize their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events each October.

Elder accepted the position after having worked briefly since September as student activities coordinator for Eastern Gateway Community College. He is a 2008 graduate of Edison High School and a 2013 graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville with a bachelor’s of arts degree in communication arts with concentration in radio and television.

He officially began his ACS duties on Feb. 3.

“This job is a dream coming true because I’ve wanted to work for ACS since becoming a volunteer with them back in 2007,” Elder said. “My grandmother passed away from breast cancer just six months before I was born, and with this new position, I will be organizing and recruiting for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in Canton, Canfield and Steubenville,” he said.

“I have been a volunteer with ACS since 2007, and took on the role as co-chairman (of Relay for Life) in 2012,” Elder said.

“Relay will always be near and dear to my heart and in no way am I giving up my involvement – I just can’t carry on the co-chair responsibilities given my new position,” Elder said.
