Relay planning continues Tuesday

Planners with the Steubenville Area Relay for Life sponsored by the Jefferson County Unit of the American Cancer Society will kick off 2014 with their first meeting of the new year set for Tuesday.

It will be held in lecture hall 2012 at Eastern Gateway Community College, beginning at 7 p.m.

The theme for this year’s event is “I Relay – What’s Your Superpower?” The goal is to raise $156,000 for education, research, patient services and advocacy and also to have 33 teams, 160 survivors and 95 caregivers participating.

The relay will be held at the Robert Kettlewell Memorial Stadium on the campus of Indian Creek High School in Wintersville beginning at 6 p.m. on June 20 and continuing until noon on June 21.

Kyle Elder and Jaclyn Walters are co-chairs of the relay, which had a presence again this year in Steubenville’s Christmas parade, which was held Dec. 7.

Anyone is welcome to attend the Tuesday meeting and get involved in the relay, organizers said.

Teams are urged to register online ASAP to become a part of the annual event.

Team captain packets can either be mailed or e-mailed with the option to choose when registering online at

A relay, according to the main ACS website, is an “organized, overnight community fundraising walk” that involves teams of people who camp out around a track and have members of each team who take turns walking around the track.

The relay includes food, games and activities, entertainment and camaraderie in what is a “family-friendly environment for the entire community.”

Teams are being urged to once again become ACS CAN teams. For the Steubenville relay to become an ACS CAN event, it means four of 10 people on a team are needed to sign up as ACS CAN members.

ACS CAN, an acronym for American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, is the main advocacy program through ACS to make cancer a national priority.

In addition to the January meeting, additional planning meetings will be held at 7 p.m. at EGCC on Feb. 11, March 11 and April 8.
